The Cannabis Corner is a weekly series in the Pioneer designed to give readers a look at the individuals working in the Big Rapids’ marijuana industry. Those featured will give readers their perspectives on the cannabis community in a Meet Your Neighbor-type Q&A.
Name: Joe Keck
Occupation: General manager at KKind
1. What first got you interested in the marijuana industry
Keck: “I’m a medical marijuana patient and an advocate for cannabis as a holistic health. For me personally, I’m a success story with gastrointestinal issues and also anxiety and suffering from not being able to sleep right. Cannabis has helped me find quality of life with pain and been able to control my anxiety, especially right now with the uncertainty of everything going on right now.”
2. What is the best part of your job?
Keck:“The best part, in my opinion, is connect with people and helping them. If I can find somebody find a quality of life then I’ve done my job and that’s my favorite part is doing the job right. I also like learning about people and different types of cannabis every day and the medicinal values each strain has to offer.”
3. What makes Big Rapids a great city for a marijuana business?
Keck:“I think Big Rapids as a whole, with the university here, has helped us cater to students of (legal) age among other adults. I know a big problem is prescription drugs in the college-student world and there’s instances where kids will take something and don’t know what it is. With cannabis, some sativas can actually help you focus and indicas can help bring down your anxiety. The experience I’ve had with people in the community of Big Rapids has really great and everyone here is awesome. Cannabis seems to go over really well.”
4. What’s your advice to somebody interested in trying marijuana for the first time?
Keck: “Start small. Pick your favorite method of use. If you typically want to stay awake from smoking or vaping, there’s other ways such as edibles. It’s a different type of feeling as opposed to smoking, but I would always encourage starting small.”
5. What are your 3 favorite marijuana strains?
Keck:“Purple Punch, GG #4, and Girl Scout Cookies.”
Editor’s note: Marijuana, if consumed, should only be consumed by those of 21 and older or with proper medical documentation. It is illegal to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of marijuana.
